And then there are interfacings. Interfacings give handbags their structure. They hold you up when you're feeling down. Shopping for interfacings can be overwhelming to a novice bag maker. The different names and numbers can leave your head spinning, but have no fear! Alicia of Swoon Bag Patterns has a helpful blog post about the different types of interfacings, and what to use them for. Pellon also has this downloadable PDF guide on the Top Ten Handbag Interfacings. It's a handy tool to take shopping with you.
Pellon has graciously offered to give away a collection containing the four basics you'll need for bag making: 1 pkg Shape Flex SF101, 1 pkg Fusible Fleece 987F, 1 pkg Peltex Ultra Firm Stabilizer 70, and 1 pkg Craft-Fuse 808!

Don't forget, Parcel #7 ends this Friday at midnight EST, so don't miss out on the chance to choose your own price for this collection of digital handbag patterns from indie designers. It's our goal to raise $20,000 for the charity, Donors Choose, and we're so close! With you're help, we can meet our goal.
I was so clueless about interfacing when I first started to sew! I'm still crushing on rock the stitch's fawn lily dress and tunic pattern.
ReplyDeleteI, too, was completely clueless about interfacing and made a bunch of meh bags because of choosing the wrong one. :( I am dying to stitch up the bruyere and/or the alder shirtdress.
ReplyDeleteI've been totally into any Swoon pattern lately....would love to win this package!
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorites is the Lady Skater. I also really love Pretty in Peplum by Sew Much Ado.
ReplyDeleteMy current favourites are Sara Lawson's bags from SewSweetness. I have to admit im not that adventurous when it comes to interfacing. I would love to practice more with different types of them!
ReplyDeleteI really loved the Staple dress for me and the Hosh pants for my daughter from previous parcels. Thanks for this initiative!
ReplyDeleteI don't know if I truly have a favorite yet, but I have worn my Sewaholic Renfrew the most so far!
ReplyDeleteWoo hoo! Amanda! You're the winner! You should have an email from me in your inbox.

ReplyDeleteLove the Skater Dress and the bag patterns from Sara Lawson. Thanks for a great giveaway. My parcel is purchased and ready to sew!
ReplyDeleteI've been making mostly kids clothes but got into making smallish bags for myself. A new dslr camera inspired me to make my own camera bag--I plan to take the camera bag pattern and that messenger bag pattern that's in the parcel and make myself a camera and laptop bag set that will rival anything Jo Totes ever made and sold! Just looking for the perfect leather piece now. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm new to bag making, with the exception of the Water (beer) Bottle Tote from a previous PPP. Mostly I make dresses and I love everything from Deer and Doe, and By Hand London.
ReplyDeleteAs I type, I was just taking a break from fitting a muslin Jaimie dress from scientific seamstress and it's just now taking shape. I saw this post and thought: a bag would go very well with this! *so here I am!
ReplyDeleteI shared to my sewing group and hope some members join in the conversation and contest :)
ReplyDeleteAt the moment I can't decide between Colette Moneta and Jeniffer Lauren Bronte Top as my favourite indie pattern. In terms of bags, I'm about half way through my second Swoon Rosie bag - the shape and size is just so practical for me.
ReplyDeleteI am happy to see the variety available now through the indie designers. It can be a bit overwhelming at times to this old dinosaur, lol.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite pattern is Belladone from Deer & Doe! I love it so much!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite indie pattern is the Hollyburn skirt from sewaholic!
ReplyDeleteI am a big supporter of Emmaline bags. Great pattern writing with bags that fit my style. Plus, I can buy the hardware, too.
ReplyDeleteI have made several of Michelle's bags (Michellepatterns.com). I adore her Shopping Bags! and she's a great pattern writer.
